DAVIES: Do we know of connections between Project Veritas and James O'Keefe and Trump, Donald Trump or the Trump family? GOLDMAN: You know, individuals - we're not exactly sure who was behind this effort - but it's clear that they believe that, you know, H.R. Prince, the former head of Blackwater Worldwide and the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, has at times served as an informal adviser to Trump administration officials. What's interesting about that Instagram post - and you can see it yourself, it's still out there - they like to describe themselves as journalists. It was unclear whether Mr. Seddon was involved in planning that operation. You'd have to ask Mr. O'Keefe. It's not clear to me how close he is to Trump. Good stuff, Mr. Seddon wrote back. Efforts to locate Mr. Thomas were unsuccessful. DAVIES: We need to take a break here. And then on a parallel but different track, you know, Sofia is trying to make her way through the Young Democrats of Wyoming, the Wyoming Democratic Party, you know, building her bona fides as an eager, young Democrat. And they were deeply critical of Trump. He owns a home on a lot adjoining his familys Double E Ranch in Wapiti. They also did the secret interviews at the airport in Cody in the - at the Prince hangar. And GOLDMAN: Involving Roy Moore - exactly. A spokesman for the firm said that Alston & Bird has never contributed to Project Veritas on its own behalf, nor is it a client of ours. James OKeefe, a conservative activist, founded Project Veritas. But before the parties get to the lawsuits merits, The Intercept is contending, among other arguments, that Wyoming is not the right place for the case to be heard. And another individual named Barbara Ledeen, who worked for a prominent senator, his committee - Chuck Grassley - she admitted her involvement, and she had actually said she had met with a Project Veritas operative. Over the past year and a half, The New York Times has reported on an effort by conservatives to train operatives in undercover spy techniques to infiltrate progressive groups, political campaigns, unions and the offices of Democratic and moderate Republican elected officials. DAVIES: Right. And if they were given money, if the money was distributed by this former spy, Richard Seddon, and they pulled from that pot of money, which was part of that operation, that could also be problematic. The list included John Cox, then the director of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, and Scott Talbott, then the director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. In a Jan. 15 order, U.S. District Court Judge Alan Johnson of Cheyenne tossed out Prince's defamation lawsuit against The Intercept. Mr. Seddon directed an undercover operative to secretly tape the unions local leaders and try to gather information that could be made public to damage the organization, documents show. This includes participating in marches or rallies in support of a movement or giving money to, or raising money for, any political candidate or election cause. And in the end, you know, O'Keefe would release them and, you know, make a big deal out of them. Anyone can read what you share. But the effort is a glimpse of a vigorous private campaign to try to undermine political groups or individuals perceived to be in opposition to Mr. Trumps agenda. His attorney did not provide an on-the-record response to questions about his clients voting history while elections officials in Virginia said any requests for voter information must be made in person, at the location where the individual registered. Their names are Beau Maier and Sofia LaRocca, and they're in Las Vegas for a Democratic primary debate. You know, again, as when Barbara Ledeen, the staffer for the Senate Judiciary Committee, which was run by Chuck Grassley, you know, was trying to find Hillary Clinton's missing emails, and Prince gets involved in that, too. He's a former British intelligence officer who served in Washington, D.C., and in Pakistan and eventually leaves the British Secret Intelligence Service and develops some relationship with Erik Prince, a security contractor, and ends up being director of field operations at the conservative group known as Project Veritas. Adam Goldman is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times. And they will get, you know, negative information from public records. So while Times staff members may vote, they are not allowed to endorse or campaign for candidates or political causes. Previously, he covered national security for The Washington Post and worked on the investigative team at the Associated Press, where he and his colleagues revealed the New York Police Department's Muslim spying programs. Jim Mattis, then the defense secretary, rejected the idea. DAVIES: Right. I knew something was off immediately. There was eventually litigation about that, wasn't there? And I realized they were giving money to Democrats in Wyoming, Arizona and Colorado. Mr. OKeefe earned about $387,000. Prince submitted his own declaration to presiding U.S. District Judge Alan Johnson in September, disputing The Intercepts reporting and laying out some of his bona fides as a Wyomingite. Erik Prince, founder of the private military firm Blackwater, helped raise money for a political-intelligence operation run by Richard Seddon, a former British spy. Erik Prince, the former head of Blackwater Worldwide and the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, has at times served as an informal adviser to Trump administration officials. They - you know, there's a wide range of targets, and many of them have been exposed. A local farmer was utilizing the land to grow corn and soybean crops, but the potential for the ranch was far from being realized. We rely on our journalists to be independent observers. Those contentions have become a key point of early proceedings in the case. Defendants wrote and published a false and defamatory article about a Wyoming residents Wyoming-based business activities knowing that it would cause harm principally in Wyoming, New York attorney Matthew Schwartz charged in one filing. The parties are currently awaiting a ruling from Judge Johnson, who could choose to allow the case to proceed in Wyoming; permit some more limited fact-gathering about the appropriate jurisdiction; transfer the case to New York; or throw it out entirely. So what exactly was the plan to (laughter) catch McMaster saying something he shouldn't? What was this about? Neither party wants to be, you know, exposed to this kind of spycraft - right? Now, you mentioned Project Veritas. And this photo of James O'Keefe, who's, you know, the founder of Project Veritas, firing a weapon with a silencer, apparently, at Erik Prince's ranch - were they being trained in firearms there? So, you know, this is not something I had ever done as a - you know, this is not something journalists do. Mr. The group has also become intertwined with the political activities of Mr. Trump and his family. Later that year, Mr. She was attending, you know, Democratic fundraisers. Erik Prince doesn't live in the state, he's from the same party as the incumbent, Sen. John Barrasso, and he's best known for founding a private security firm, Blackwater, that was kicked out of . So somebody was just waiting - and it turned out to be me and Mark - to come along and make the connection between the Sofia de LaRocca (ph) out in Wyoming and "Maria," quote, unquote, on the Project Veritas Exposed website. We're speaking with New York Times reporter Adam Goldman, one of a team of Times reporters who've been writing about an effort by conservatives to train operatives in undercover operations to infiltrate progressive groups, unions and the offices and campaigns of Democratic and moderate Republican candidates and elected officials. I mean, he - it seems that - it's our understanding that Prince introduced Seddon to Project Veritas. And then Mark Mazzetti, you know, my colleague, who just is an extraordinary journalist, we - you know, we managed to suss out what was going - we think - to a great degree what was going on in Wyoming and these other states. You know, O'Keefe has clearly raised a lot of money, you know, millions of dollars. No one tells Project Veritas who or what to investigate, he said. Last week, our guest, reporter Adam Goldman, co-authored a story about a couple who ingratiated themselves with Democrats in Wyoming, often making substantial political contributions to ensure their access to valuable information. You know, and each time, you know, money is wired in furtherance of that crime, you know, that's also - that could be a possible count of mail fraud. So I thought to myself, why are they giving money to these people, these Democratic politicians? GOLDMAN: Yes, very wealthy and very conservative. Did it help, you know, Project Veritas raise more money? It's my understanding he designed the training exercises, which could have included, like, you know, going out to bars in Cody and trying to get people's names and numbers, how to pitch somebody in an elevator, how to spot people who could potentially provide you information. That's how you found them, and that's what raised the question? Attorneys for the outlet say The Intercept has no particular connection to the state and Princes ties are uncertain. DAVIES: And when we say they targeted these public officials or FBI agents, what would they do? So what I'm saying is from Richard Seddon's standpoint, the fact that she had a picture up on Project Veritas Exposed, that was a real risk they were taking, right? We'll talk about Project Veritas in a moment. DAVIES: What did you learn about how Beau and Sofia met? GOLDMAN: Beau does. And as the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press summarizes, New York provides absolute protection from forced disclosure of materials received in confidence by a professional journalist, including the identity of a source.. NY Times reporter Adam Goldman describes an undercover effort, headed up by an avid Trump supporter, that trained conservatives in espionage techniques and sent them to dig up dirt on progressives. GOLDMAN: Well, some people have speculated this was some sort of back channel to Russia because there was a - I believe there was a Russian investment manager there who has ties to Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia. officer who went on to win an important House seat in Virginia as a Democrat. And Mr. O'Keefe disclosed that Foster Friess had actually given Project Veritas money. Reaching out to several intelligence veterans and occasionally using Mr. Seddon to make the pitch Mr. ADAM GOLDMAN: They went there after making sizable donations to the DNC, the Democratic National Committee - $10,000 each - at the request of a Colorado businessman who was a - he's a fundraiser for the Democrats and basically said, if you make this donation, you can come and hang out in Las Vegas. These two are conservatives, right? This includes participating in marches or rallies in support of a movement or giving money to, or raising money for, any political candidate or election cause. The special counsels report said that Mr. GOLDMAN: Yeah, I think they nearly tripled the number of people they hired. You know, I think part of Mr. O'Keefe's motto - I think it's important for him to have regular and consistent content - right? You know, there was one exercise, I believe, where they had a cop - you know, a local cop who was there. The New York Times broke the news of Princes potential run on Oct. 8, 2017, saying hed recently traveled to Wyoming to explore ways to establish residency there., The following day, Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow asked Prince whether the Times report was real or fake news, mentioning, Im not 100% positive on your connection to Wyoming.. They broke into the DNC. GOLDMAN: She was very active. Prince said he regularly host[s] customers, investors, employees and other business associates at my Wyoming ranch.. When a muckraking news site published a story alleging private security contractor and Blackwater founder Erik Prince had offered his services to a Russian mercenary firm, the connections to Wyoming were not obvious; the state was never mentioned in the piece. Prince recruited Mr. Seddon to join the conservative group Project Veritas to teach espionage skills to its operatives and manage its undercover operations. I mean, we know that Erik Prince was trying to sell a plan to the Trump administration to put these - for him, in fact, to put a private, you know, army of a bunch of mercenaries in Afghanistan and sort of take over those responsibilities from the government, sort of, in some ways, replace the U.S. forces on the ground there. James OKeefe, the head of Project Veritas, declined to answer detailed questions about Mr. Erik Prince Helped Raise Money for Conservative Spy Venture, https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/08/us/politics/erik-prince-spy-operation-trump-democrats.html.
